Foreign Office, September 21, 1906. prevention of piracy on the waterways in the neighbourhood of Canton, I am ted by Secretary Sir E. Grey to inform you that a copy of your letter of the 28th has been forwarded to His Majesty's Representative at Peking, who has been orized, should be see no objection, to suggest to the Chinese Government, as osed by the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce, that the policing of the waterways e mentioned should be intrusted to European officers. an's reply a further communication will be addressed to you on this point.

On the receipt of Sir J. I am at the same time to inform you that the Lords Commissioners of the iralty, to whom the suggestions for the protection of the riverine trade, contained e penultimate paragraph of your letter of the 28th July last, were referred, have directions to the Commander-in-chief on the China Station to call on the Com- ling Officers of His Majesty's ships on the West River to report periodically on ate of security of traffic on the waterways in the neighbourhood of Canton, and time to time to suggest such improvements as may appear to them desirable in lans devised for keeping puracy in check.
